Thinking of Snowbirding? Here’s What You Need to Know Before Going South

When you travel in an RV, you have the freedom to go wherever you want without sacrificing the comforts of home. You won’t have to stay in a hotel or rent an overpriced Airbnb that may or may not be as amazing as it sounded online. Instead, you get to sleep in your own bed, on your own sheets, and use your own kitchen to make meals.

But that freedom has one amazing benefit: you’re able to escape the cold and head south for the winter. This is known as snowbirding and if you’ve never done it before, there are a few important things you’ll want to keep in mind before you hit the road.

Make Reservations Now
Southern RV parks fill up fast during the winter months. That means you’ll want to make reservations as soon as you can. Rather than booking sites online, consider calling the park directly. Many offer discounts for snowbirds that can help you save money on your trip. Even better, they may be able to refer you to a nearby park if they’re full.

Consider Monthly Stays
Staying in an RV park for a month at a time is often cheaper than staying for just a week or two. If you’re planning on staying in the same general area or want to travel slowly and explore everything an area has to offer, consider booking a site for a month at a time. You’ll likely lock in a lower rate, even if you have to pay for electricity, water, or both.

Remember to Winterize Your Home
You know the importance of winterizing your RV before you put it in storage for the season. But have you given the same thought to your home? If you’re going to be gone for a while, you’ll want to winterize your house thoroughly.

You’ll also want to leave the heat set at no lower than 52 degrees and consider leaving the cabinets in front of your sinks open to help warm air circulate around the pipes.

Pack Only What You Need
When you’re leaving for months on end, it’s tempting to pack everything you can think of. Don’t. Remember, you’re still traveling in an RV with limited space. Use care when you’re packing and only pack the items you truly need. If you think you’re only going to use an item once or twice during your trip, you may be better off leaving it at home.

Reserve a Storage Space for Spring
Once you return from your travels, you’ll need a safe place to store your RV until you’re ready to take it out on another excursion. That means you’ll want to reserve a storage space for spring well in advance.

At goHomePort’s Camelot location, we have a variety of spaces to choose from. Reserve your site online now and make sure you have a place to park when you come home.
