Hitting the road as a
full-time RVer lets you experience everything the country has to offer and see new sights every day. But unless you’re retired, you’ll need a way to earn a living while you’re on the road. For many RVers, that means finding jobs online that let them work remotely and working remotely means you’ll need access to reliable internet at all times. Unfortunately, the internet available at many campgrounds is barely fast enough to load email let alone host a Zoom call. Here are a few tips to help you find reliable (and fast) internet on the road.
Start With Your Cellular Provider
Many cellular providers are offering unlimited data plans for their smartphones and those plans often include a certain amount of unthrottled hotspot data. Talk to your cellular provider and find out what types of plans they offer. You may be able to upgrade your current plan to an unlimited data plan and use your phone’s hotspot to get work done. Keep in mind that once you reach your hotspot data limit, your speeds may be slower, but they shouldn’t crawl to a halt. You’ll still be able to use your hotspot to surf the internet at slower speeds.
Look Into Mobile Internet Providers
Believe it or not, there are some companies that offer truly unlimited cellular data. These companies often use older SIM cards and devices with truly unlimited data and rent them to you at a set rate. You’ll be able to choose your provider based on the cellular network the device connects to, giving you the chance to pick the network that offers the best coverage where you usually camp or travel.
Some of the most popular companies include
Unlimitedville,
Infinite LTE Data, and
Nomad Internet.
Consider Co-Working Spaces
If you tend to travel to cities or large towns and need ultra-high-speed internet, hotspots may not be enough to let you work. Instead, you’ll want to consider working out of coworking spaces in each location you travel to. Some companies like
WeWork offer membership plans that let you access coworking spaces across the country. When you work out of a coworking space, you’ll also have access to equipment like printers, fax machines, scanners, and of course, unlimited coffee so you can stay focused.
Satellite Internet Can Be an Option
If you tend to travel off the beaten path and like to camp in the middle of nowhere without cell service, your phone’s hotspot won’t be enough. Instead, you’ll want to explore satellite internet connections to help you get work done. For RVers,
Starlink’s Roam service offers the best connection speeds and gives you the flexibility of connecting anywhere the satellites can send a signal. You’ll have service in most locations as long as you have an unobstructed view of the sky.
Staying Connected Is Doable
Reliable internet can make full-timing easier and lets you continue earning money no matter where you’re parked. These are just a few great options you have at your disposal, but if you’re thinking of using Starlink and want to permanently mount the equipment to your rig, you don’t have to install it on your own.
